The Work of Jay Bonner: an Eldorado Resident and Specialist of Islamic Geometric and Floral Ornament. 7 pm, Friday, February 16, VGPL Meeting Room. Event is free and open to the public.

This presentation will focus upon Bonner’s work as an architectural design consultant specializing in traditional Islamic geometric and floral ornament, including his work for the two sacred Islamic monuments in Mecca and Medina, Saudi Arabia. He will also discuss examples of his original geometric and floral patterns that adhere to long established Islamic artistic conventions and aesthetics. In addition to designs with complex combinations of differentiated local symmetry (such as 11- and 13-pointed stars), these will include geometric examples that visually express modern mathematical concepts of self-similarity, quasi-crystallinity, aperiodicity, Penrose inflation and deflation, and Penrose edge matching rules.
